TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - Tacoma-based MultiCare Health System is expanding its reach into Eastern Washington with the $425 million purchase of two Spokane-area hospitals and a network of clinics.

The not-for-profit health care organization announced Thursday that it is buying Deaconess Hospital in Spokane and Valley Hospital in Spokane Valley. It’s also buying Rockwood clinics, a network of primary, specialty and urgent care clinics in the Inland Northwest.

The News-Tribune says facilities are owned by Rockwood Health System, a subsidiary of struggling Tennessee-based Community Health Systems, Inc.

Rockwood spokesman George Hampton says the purchase includes a commitment from MultiCare to offer jobs to all Rockwood employees in good standing.

The purchase is expected to be completed in spring.

MultiCare operates five hospitals in the Puget Sound area, including Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Tacoma General Hospital.
