Virginia coach Tony Bennett has dismissed forward Austin Nichols from the basketball team.

The school announced the move Friday but did not give a specific reason for the redshirt junior’s dismissal.

“It’s a privilege to be a part of this program and Austin has lost that privilege,” Bennett said in a release. “We have standards for our student-athletes and when those standards aren’t met, there are consequences and this is the unfortunate consequence.”

Nichols, who transferred from Memphis and sat out last season per NCAA transfer requirements, was previously suspended for the Cavaliers’ two preseason scrimmages and the season opener at UNCG for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

The 6-foot-9 Nichols scored 11 points and had three rebounds in his only appearance for the eighth-ranked Cavaliers.

A gifted offensive player, he was expected to help fill a frontcourt void left by the graduations of Anthony Gill and Mike Tobey. He started 60 games in two seasons at Memphis and averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.4 blocks as a sophomore.
