PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Family Court has finalized 23 adoptions with 20 families for its 13th annual National Adoption Day.

Rhode Island’s celebration coincided with events being held across the nation on Saturday to raise awareness about the adoption process and the large number of children available for adoption.

Rhode Island Family Court Chief Judge Michael B. Forte welcomed more than 250 people to Saturday’s event at the Garrahy Judicial Complex.

He says the parents who are taking the children into their homes and hearts are true heroes.

Chief Justice Paul Suttell says he’s pleased that the state continues to join dozens of court systems in celebrating this joyous day.
