JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Cool weather has arrived on time for Saturday’s opening of deer season, when many Mississippians will be in the woods.

The first hunting window runs until Dec. 1, with an additional window for hunting later in December and January. Hunting with dogs is allowed during the current period.

Hunters 16 or older can kill antlerless deer and bucks with antlers of legal size on private land. On public land, they can only kill legal bucks.

In most of the state, hunters can kill five antlerless deer each year, while they are limited to three in southeastern Mississippi and in National Forests. Hunters 16 or older can kill one buck per day and three per year.

Bowhunters, children younger than 16 and those using primitive weapons were allowed to hunt earlier.
