PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Michael Flynn, who is Donald Trump’s pick to serve as national security adviser, tells his hometown newspaper in Rhode Island he’s honored to accept and serve the country he loves.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/2g8K3Wt ) Flynn, who grew up Middletown, Rhode Island, told the paper Friday that he and Republican President-elect Trump have a lot in common in terms of how they see the world and the military. Flynn is a retired Army lieutenant general and intelligence officer.

Flynn says he has advised Trump on foreign policy, national security, intelligence and the military since they met last year.

Flynn is a harsh critic of Muslim extremism and the religion itself.

Flynn and his wife, Lori, live in Virginia but still own a home in Middletown and often visit.
