FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - A North Texas jury has sentenced a 26-year-old man to death for fatally shooting his estranged girlfriend, her mother and young brother.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports (https://bit.ly/2frtQKd ) that jurors deliberated for about four hours on Friday before sentencing Amos Joseph Wells III. He had been convicted of capital murder on Nov. 3 for the July 2013 slayings.

The shooting at a Fort Worth home was preceded by an argument between Wells and 22-year-old Chanice Reed, who was pregnant at the time. Authorities say Wells retrieved a handgun and killed the three.

Wells later surrendered to police by asking to be shot and killed.

After being sentenced, Wells told his relatives in court that, “I did this. I’m an adult. Don’t bear this burden. This burden is mine.”
