RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Virginia Democrat who was exploring a bid for lieutenant governor has decided not to run.

State House Del. Eileen Filler-Corn announced Saturday she was not going to seek the statewide office, which is largely ceremonial but is often a springboard for a gubernatorial run.

Filler-Corn, a Northern Virginia lobbyist, said she’d been exploring a possible run for lieutenant governor for the past several months. Virginia will hold elections for statewide offices in 2017.

Several Republicans are vying for their party’s nomination to run for lieutenant governor. For Democrats, Justin Fairfax and Gene Rossi, both attorneys from Northern Virginia, have publicly declared they are running.
