COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A bronze, life-sized statue of the University of South Carolina’s beloved mascot Cocky could be sitting on a park bench on campus by next fall.

The State newspaper of Columbia reports (https://bit.ly/2g6u90K ) that trustees on the board’s buildings and ground committee unanimously approved the $85,000 project Friday. The full board is expected to give final approval.

Plans call for the bronze Cocky to be sitting on a bench near the Melton Observatory.

Vice president of student affairs Dennis Pruitt says he expects the bench to become an iconic spot where prospective students will flock to get their photos taken.

Pruitt says the university has raised about $25,000 for the project so far by selling smaller versions of the statue, and donations will cover the balance.
