AMES, Iowa (AP) - Police have arrested an Ames woman on suspicion of killing her husband in a shooting death that authorities had originally reported as an accident.

Des Moines television station KCCI reports (https://bit.ly/2e31g5r ) that 35-year-old Candace Cummings has been charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 21 shooting death of 36-year-old Harland “Jesse” Cummings.

Officers sent to a trailer home found Cummings, who’d been shot in the head. Witnesses at the home told police the shooting was an accident.

But police say Candace Cummings later told investigators as she was being interviewed that she killed her husband because of stress in their marriage.

She remained in the Story County Jail on Wednesday and could not be reached for comment. No attorney is yet listed for her in online court records.
