LIVERPOOL, England (AP) - Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho was carried off on a stretcher with his right leg in a brace during the first half of an English Premier League match against Sunderland on Saturday.

The Brazil international writhed in pain after a challenge by Sunderland midfielder Didier Ndong and signaled to the bench before being taken off in the 34th minute at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said Coutinho hurt his ankle, but didn’t know the seriousness of the injury.

“We have to wait for the scan,” Klopp said. “What we know in this moment is it is something with the ankle and that’s it, so we all have to wait.

“He had pain, but (the) pain gets better.”

Coutinho has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season.

Liverpool won the match 2-0.
