HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A longtime employee of the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut has been named the organization’s new executive director.

David McGuire was recently chosen by the Connecticut ACLU’s board of directors following a nationwide search.

First hired as a staff attorney in 2007, he became the group’s first legislative and policy director in 2015.

McGuire is credited with working to pass legislation at the state Capitol that regulates police use of stun guns and protects cellphone privacy. He has also worked on policies involving LGBT rights, racial matters, criminal justice changes, and police accountability.

Andy Schatz, president of the organization’s board of directors, says McGuire has proven to be a “steadfast and effective champion of civil rights for all people.”
