SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) - Phoenix-area police say an officer responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle fatally shot a man inside a car early Saturday.

The Surprise Police Department identified the dead man as 20-year-old Derek Adame of Surprise.

Police say an altercation ensued, and the officer fired at least one shot. They say the suspect then drove for a short distance before hitting a parked vehicle.

Sgt. Tim Klarkowski says officers performed life-saving measures on the victim and called the fire department, but the man died of his injuries.

The officer who shot him was taken to a hospital and later released. Police said they expect to release the officer’s name in the next few days.

Police said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and released no other details.
