BOSTON (AP) - The bravest and best firefighters in Massachusetts are scheduled to be honored at a special event in Worcester.

State Public Safety Secretary Daniel Bennett and State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey are handing out the 27th annual Firefighter of the Year awards on Tuesday at Mechanics Hall.

The awards to be presented include the Medal of Valor, Individual Meritorious Conduct, Group Meritorious Conduct, the Norman Knight Award for Excellence in Community Service and the Excellence in Leadership Award.

Firefighters from Boston, Bourne, Fitchburg, Barnstable, Lynn, Malden, Saugus, Scituate, Swansea, Watertown and Weymouth will be honored.

In addition, retired State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan is being honored for his long career and leadership that has led to better-trained firefighters, stronger fire codes and safer communities.
