JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) - Officials at Joint Base Lewis-McChord want the public to know that the loud booms they’ll hear this week is just practice.

Starting Monday at 6:30 a.m., the First Battalion will conduct training with M777 155mm Howitzers at JBLM.

Officials say the activities will be noticed during the day, evening and nighttime hours. They’ll be firing from two points on the base.

The training allows military members to improve the skills needed for combat.

JBLM usually conducts larger-scale artillery firing at its Yakima Training Center to minimize the impact on communities. But some training must happen at the base.

The training is scheduled to run continuously from Monday morning to midnight on Wednesday.
