WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) - The McKenzie County Commission is slated to appoint an interim sheriff to replace Sheriff Gary Schwartzenberger as removal proceedings against him move forward.

The Bismarck Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2gvrRET ) that the commission will hold a special meeting on Monday to appoint an interim sheriff.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple suspended Schwartzenberger last week after an investigation by the state attorney general’s office.

The commission in October asked Dalrymple to remove the sheriff from office, citing an alleged workplace culture of bullying and retaliation. Schwartzenberger unsuccessfully asked a judge to stop the effort.

The sheriff will get a hearing before Dalrymple decides whether to oust him from office. Schwartzenberger has said he looks forward to getting due process.
