PITTSBURGH (AP) - An off-duty officer from the suburbs has been charged with aggravated assault for shooting a county jail guard in Pittsburgh after an argument in a nearby bar.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for 24-year-old Joshua Gonzalez, the off-duty Aliquippa officer charged in the shooting about 3 a.m. Thursday.

Police say Gonzalez acknowledged shooting 29-year-old Allegheny County Jail guard Kevin Miller, but has claimed he did that only because Miller appeared to be reaching for a weapon.

But police say Miller doesn’t own a gun and told them Gonzalez shot him after Miller confronted Gonzalez about hitting a woman during the earlier disturbance at the Milestone Bar in neighboring Brentwood.

Gonzalez doesn’t have an attorney listed in court records, and has yet to be arraigned.

Miller is recovering in a Pittsburgh hospital.
