Rep. Kathleen Rice, who is supporting Rep. Tim Ryan to be the next House minority leader, said her backing Mr. Ryan isn’t “personal” but that the party needs someone willing to change gears after a tough 2016 election.

“He’s a new voice. We need new leadership,” Ms. Rice said on CNN’s “New Day.”

“The system is set up to support powerful people, and it’s very difficult to get people like me or Tim Ryan into the conversation,” said Ms. Rice, New York Democrat. “So I’m very proud of the support that I’m giving Tim.”

“Again, this is not personal,” she said. “I think that this is what we need more of. We need people who are willing to come out and say you know what, we need to try something different.”

“And I hope that more of my colleagues will follow me on that path,” she said.

Mr. Ryan, Ohio Democrat, has won several public endorsements in his challenge to current Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for her leadership post. House Democrats are slated to elect their party leaders on Wednesday.
