SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) - A Surprise police officer who fatally shot a motorist during a suspicious-vehicle call has been placed on paid leave.

Authorities say Officer Joseph Gruver, a one-year veteran of the Surprise Police Department, was put on leave as part of the standard practice for examining such incidents.

The shooting occurred Saturday morning after Gruver made contact with 20-year-old Derek Adame of Surprise.

Police say an altercation ensued between Gruver and Derek Adame and that the officer fired at least one round from his gun.

Adame drove away from the scene, but collided with a parked car.

Officers tried life-saving measures on Adame, but he was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.

The officer was brought to a hospital for treatment and released.
