WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A humpback whale found dead in the Port of Wilmington last week is believed to have died because it was entangled in fishing gear.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports (https://delonline.us/2eVxiiV ) the Lewes-based Marine Education, Research & Rehabilitation Institute said Friday that fishing gear was found tangled around the whale’s pectoral fins.

The paper reported Wednesday that Suzanne Thurman, the organization’s executive director, says the whale also had a significant mouth wound. Thurman says the wound was the result of rope and gear that was lodged in the whale’s throat, which likely caused pain and prevented the whale from eating properly.

Thurman says the gear is being sent to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials who will see if it was labeled properly and who owned it.
