DETROIT (AP) - Elections officials expect 45 percent to 50 percent of Detroit’s 513,000 registered voters to cast ballots in Tuesday’s general election.

City Clerk Janice Winfrey says Thursday that 51 percent voted in the 2012 general election and 53 percent cast ballots in 2008.

Of the more than 54,600 absentee ballots issued so far, nearly 38,800 have been returned. The city expects to count 62,000 to 68,000 absentee ballots. About 81,000 were counted four years ago and 77,000 were counted in 2008.

The city has issued about 10,000 new voter registration cards.
