A U.S. Park Police officer accidentally shot himself in the foot Thursday while he was being attacked by a raccoon.

The raccoon attacked the officer Thursday afternoon in Rock Creek Park while the officer was on Horse Stable Lane.

“While attempting to fend off the raccoon, the officer shot himself in the foot,” said Park Police spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Rose in a statement on the incident.

The officer was taken to a hospital for injuries that are not life-threatening, according to the statement provided.

Sgt. Rose said another officer at the scene shot and killed the raccoon. Animal control officers were expected to respond to the scene to retrieve it.
