DETROIT (AP) - Detroit’s Transportation Department is looking to hire 100 bus drivers as part of a major service expansion.

A recruiting event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wayne County Community College District’s eastern campus.

The city also is adding buses and roughly 1,500 trips per week to bus schedules by January. Officials have said that 80 buses were bought last year, and 20 more are expected by spring.

Money to improve transportation was included in the city’s plan to emerge from bankruptcy.

The Transportation Department’s second phase of expansion is scheduled to start in January. Last month, the department announced apprenticeship training for diesel mechanics.
