SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Republican David Damschen will stay on as Utah’s state treasurer after defeating Democrat and former state lawmaker Neil Hansen.

Damschen’s election Tuesday 11 months after he took the job.

Gov. Gary Herbert appointed him to replace Richard Ellis, who resigned from the post late last year to work for the state’s nonprofit college savings program.

Damschen was Ellis’ chief deputy and a former executive at American West Bank and U.S. Bank.

The state treasurer is responsible for the collection, investment and distribution of state money.
