CNN analyst Van Jones issued an emotional on-air response to Donald Trump’s stunning presidential victory, crediting the Republican’s success to a “whitelash against a changing country.”

“It’s hard to be a parent tonight for a lot of us. You tell your kids don’t be a bully, you tell your kids don’t be a bigot … and then you have this outcome,” Mr. Jones, a former adviser to President Obama, said early Wednesday morning as it became apparent Mr. Trump would win.

“You have people putting children to bed tonight and they are afraid of breakfast. They’re afraid of ‘How do I explain this to my children?’ “

Mr. Jones said immigrant families are “terrified” of the election results and many of his Muslim friends are thinking of leaving the country.

“This was a rebellion against the elites. True,” he acknowledged.

“But we haven’t talked about race,” he said. “This was a whitelash against a changing country. It was whitelash against a black president in part. And that’s the part where the pain comes.”

Mr. Jones was widely praised on social media for his comments, making him a trending U.S. topic on Twitter and Facebook Wednesday morning.
