SALEM, Mass. (AP) - State and local officials have gathered at a Massachusetts school to recognize a 10-year-old who tried to save a kayaker who had fallen into the water after suffering a medical issue.

The Salem News reports (https://bit.ly/2dbfH20 ) state Rep. Paul Tucker and state Sen. Joan Lovely on Tuesday joined police, city and fire officials at Carlton Innovation School in Salem to honor fifth-grader Jaydon Dancy.

Officials say the boy and a woman on Aug. 19 saw the kayaker suffering a medical event.

Officials say the boy swam out to the man and pulled him ashore. The woman went in up to her knees and helped. Paramedics gave the kayaker CPR. He didn’t survive.

The boy received a resolution from the Statehouse and a shirt, badge and hat from police.
