DURHAM, Maine (AP) - Maine State Police say a fiery crash involving a dump truck and pickup truck that left two men dead and two others severely injured was likely the result of human error.

Authorities said 21-year-old Malakai Cawood, of Limington, and 24-year-old Brandon Harthorne, of Cornish, died in the Durham crash on Sept. 21.

Investigators have determined the pickup truck carrying three men was traveling eastbound when the driver, Harthorne, failed to stop at an intersection, ran a stop sign and slammed into the dump truck. The force of the impact caused the dump truck to spin and turn over to its side.

The pickup spun and caught fire. Cawood and Harthorne were killed instantly. Thirty-five-year-old Jeremy Reardon, a third occupant, and the dump truck’s driver were hospitalized with serious injuries.
