PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Portland Fire & Rescue spokesman says three firefighters injured in an explosion are all doing well.

Lt. Rich Chatman says one of the firefighters, Lt. Peter St. John, was in good spirits following surgery for a broken leg. He was visited by the fire chief.

Chatman said construction workers cut a three-quarter inch natural gas line outside a Portland building and gas collected inside. The ignition source inside the structure has yet to be determined. The blast obliterated one building and damaged others.

Portland Police Bureau spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said two officers are recovering from “concussive-type” injuries. He said both tried to stay at the scene after Wednesday’s explosion and had to be ordered to go to the hospital.

Three civilians were also hurt. There were no fatalities.
