NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - High-Occupancy Toll Express Lanes are soon coming to Hampton Roads.

Media outlets report the Commonwealth Transportation Board voted Wednesday to approve making HOT lanes out of 8.4 miles of reversible HOV lanes from the Interstate 64/264 interchange to Interstate 564 near Norfolk Naval Station. The conversion is planned for late 2017.

The goal is to open the under-utilized carpool lanes to drivers willing to pay a toll to get out of congestion. The cost of the toll will vary, depending on traffic volumes.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says converting the HOV lanes to HOT lanes will reduce traffic on the regular lanes by an estimated 17 percent.
