CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A press conference for 5th District Congressional candidate Jane Dittmar about social media attacks and civility took a surprising turn when her opponent, State Sen. Tom Garrett, Jr., showed up unannounced.

Media outlets report that Dittmar spoke Wednesday to a group of more than 30 supporters in front of the Free Speech Wall in downtown Charlottesville. She discussed the current tone and behavior of the campaign, condemning the negative messages she and her staff have received and asking her opponent to do the same.

Dittmar’s communications director Genni Cox read aloud some recent social media comments the Dittmar campaign has called hateful rhetoric.

Shortly after the event, Garrett appeared and spoke with Dittmar. The two candidates agreed to mutually condemn the negative tone. Garrett called the personal attacks “completely unwarranted.”
