PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A change in the traffic pattern on Interstate 95 through Providence is being put into place.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is moving one of three lanes on I-95 south to a new bridge on Sunday.

Temporary lane closures for restriping work were scheduled for 10 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday.

The new configuration will mean a split near the Providence Place mall, with two highway lanes staying on the left and one on the right.

The change was first put into effect Tuesday but caused a massive traffic jam that stretched to the Massachusetts border. Many motorists wrongly thought they had to exit if they didn’t move to a left lane.

Transportation officials say they’re improving signs and the configuration leading up to the split.
