WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - A suspect has pleaded not guilty to charges in the shooting death of a man inside a James City County grocery store last year.

WAVY-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2eNqXUB ) that 55-year-old Brian A. Hicks of Woodbridge pleaded not guilty on Monday to first-degree murder and a gun charge in 36-year-old Gabriel R. Maness’ death.

Police say Hicks was armed with a handgun when he entered the Farm Fresh in April 2015. Maness, who was shopping inside the store, was shot multiple times and died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Police said the suspect remained in the store after the shooting and was taken into custody.

A motive in the shooting remains unclear.

Hicks‘ trial is set to begin February 2017.
