OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a third man in connection with the 2006 shooting death of an Oceanside police officer.

Police say 26-year-old Jose Compre of Oceanside was arrested Thursday morning.

Investigators say new information led to the arrest but details haven’t been released.

The officer, 25-year-old Dan Bessant, was killed while covering another officer who had stopped a car.

Authorities say gang member Meki Gaono, who was 17 at the time, fired a rifle at the officer.

Compre, Gaono and another teen were arrested shortly after the killing but charges against him were dismissed.

Gaono and another gang member, Penifoti Teaotui, were later convicted of the killing and sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole.
