LINCOLNTON, N.C. (AP) - A sheriff’s deputy’s daughter is suffering from a gunshot wound after the law officer’s service handgun discharged while she was showing it off.

Multiple media organizations report that the 11-year-old daughter of Lincoln County sheriff’s deputy Misty Michelle Flowers is recovering in a hospital from the gunshot wound. She required emergency surgery and is in stable condition.

Investigators said Flowers was off-duty and at home when she was showing her service weapon to friends late Saturday. The weapon fired accidentally and the bullet went through a wall and struck the girl.

The 38-year-old Flowers works at the Lincoln County courthouse.

The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
