CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) - The mayor of an Eastern Panhandle community is offering a day of prayer before next month’s election.

The Journal (https://bit.ly/2eJnitb ) reports Charles Town Mayor Peggy Smith issued a proclamation for all denominations. She says a prayer gathering will be held at Wainwright Baptist Church in Charles Town from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. next Saturday.

Smith says she was inspired by a resident who appeared before the Charles Town City Council earlier in October and requested the day of prayer to promote peace. Her proclamation meant the issue did not require the council’s approval.

Smith said she hopes the prayer event will inspire residents to go out and vote in the Nov. 8 general election.
