Melania Trump, or Bill Clinton, will inherit first lady Michelle Obama’s kitchen garden at the White House.
The Burpee Foundation announced Wednesday a $2.5 million gift to establish a permanent White House kitchen garden, to “further develop” Mrs. Obama’s creation on the South Lawn. The donation will be made by the home gardening company, W. Atlee Burpee, and the foundation.
George Ball, chairman and CEO of the Pennsylvania-based Burpee, said the formal vegetable garden at the White House “resurrects a tradition that goes back to John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.” He said the company recognizes the importance of continuing the garden’s educational activities.
The gift will be made to the National Park Foundation, which is responsible for the garden, and will be made over a 17-year period to cover direct costs to expand and maintain it.
