SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is giving all deputies department-issued gun vaults for their personal vehicles to help promote weapon safety.

KNTV-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2dxz9su ) that the decision comes after several law enforcement officers’ guns have been stolen from vehicles recently.

The vaults will be installed in unmarked Sheriff’s Office vehicles as well as deputies personal cars so that firearms can be stored safely at all times. A total of 750 portable gun vaults =will be issued for deputies, funded by donations from the Sheriff’s Advisory Board.

The program comes months before a state law is set to take effect that will require any person to take the same precautions when handguns are left unattended in vehicles

The program and law comes after the high-profile San Francisco pier shooting that was committed with a stolen federal weapon.
