CHENANGO, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities are looking for the driver of an SUV caught on surveillance video passing a stopped New York school bus on the right just as an upstate student was about to get off.

Alex Menard says she was getting off the bus around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday after cheerleading practice at Chenango Forks High School, near Binghamton. She says her bag got snagged on the railing on the bus steps just as she was about to step out the door, delaying her a few seconds.

Just then an SUV with New York plates zipped past the stopped bus by driving onto the road’s right shoulder. The bus surveillance video shows the SUV speeding away as Menard walks in front of the bus.

School district officials say the bus’s stop signs were deployed at the time.

State police are investigating.
