GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - The city of Gulfport and Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport have been awarded almost $3.9 million in federal grants. Officials say the funds are intended for airport improvement and community development.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2chp1oY) the airport will receive by far the bulk of the funds - more than $3 million from the Federal Aviation Administration Improvement Program for runway improvements to maintain structural integrity, minimize debris and increase passenger safety.

Another $581,000 Community Development Block Grant will go to support community development projects near the Gulfport Job Corps Center.

The city also was awarded almost $307,000 from the HUD HOME program, which provides money to help local governments implement strategies designed to promote homeownership and increase affordable housing opportunities.
