Sen. Al Franken has apologized after he joked Wednesday about Hillary Clinton and Anthony Weiner having an affair.

Mr. Franken, a former “Saturday Night Live” cast member, made the joke to New York Times writer Mark Leibovich in response to Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffering a dislocated knee during practice Tuesday.

“It’s like finding out Hillary’s having an affair with Anthony Weiner,” the Minnesota Democrat said, according to Mr. Leibovich.

Mr. Leibovich tweeted the quote Wednesday afternoon, prompting Mr. Franken to take to Twitter to apologize an hour later.

“Pretty insensitive and stupid of me. Regret it and sincerely apologize,” Mr. Franken wrote.
