LEBANON, Pa. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a man to spend nine to 18 years in prison for providing heroin to another man who fatally overdosed in a central Pennsylvania motel two years ago.

Phillip Maldonado was also sentenced on Wednesday to pay $1,400. A jury convicted him earlier this month of charges including drug delivery resulting in death.

Maldonado is to serve the prison term following a five- to 10-year sentence he received last year for drug, weapons and theft charges.

Maldonado says he was selling drugs so he could hire an attorney for those cases, but maintains he never sold heroin to Julio Rivera, who overdosed in a Lebanon hotel in May 2014. He says he will appeal.
