ESCANABA, Mich. (AP) - An airport in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will receive nearly $270,000 from the federal government for upgrades.

The funds will allow runway rehabilitation at Delta County International Airport in Escanaba. New aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment also will be purchased.

The funding comes from the Transportation Department’s Federal Aviation Administration as part of the Runway Incursion Mitigation Program. Incursions occur when an aircraft, vehicle, or person enters the protected area of an airport designated for aircraft landings and takeoffs.

An updated inventory of airport locations where runway incursions have occurred has been developed by the FAA, which is working with airports on mitigation strategies.
