MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Questions are being raised about the legality of an outgoing Republican state lawmaker using leftover campaign cash to start a political action committee.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports Thursday (https://tiny.cc/mbgjey ) that Rep. Dean Knudson, of Hudson, registered the Wisconsin Liberty Fund in June and transferred $21,000 in unused money from his candidate campaign account.

Knudson did not seek re-election and his term ends in January.

Wisconsin Democracy Campaign director Matt Rothschild is questioning the move, saying it could empower Knudson and other lawmakers to dodge restrictions on campaign finance fundraising.

But Knudson says he was advised by state regulators that the move was allowed under the law.

Rothschild filed a complaint with the state Ethics Commission on Thursday.
