BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - St. Luke’s University Health Network in eastern Pennsylvania plans to partner with Geisinger Health System in hopes of providing cheaper, better care.

St. Luke’s is a health care network headquartered in Fountain Hill with seven hospital campuses in the Lehigh Valley.

Geisinger operates a sprawling network of 12 hospital campuses that provides services to more than 3 million people in most rural areas of 45 counties in central and northeast Pennsylvania.

Under the partnership, St. Luke’s will share information with Geisinger’s insurance arm - Geisinger Health Plan - about patients and best practices. The hope is that patients will get better preventive care and education, but without duplicating services.

The Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner must approve the partnership, which is expected to begin Jan. 1.
