EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - East Providence’s suspended city manager is seeking a public hearing on the City Council’s attempt to fire him.

Richard Kirby tells The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/2c7ptUP ) that he’s done nothing wrong and is being removed for personal reasons.

Kirby was suspended with pay last month after the council voted on a preliminary resolution to fire him.

Complaints against Kirby include his move to dismiss city human resources director Kathleen Waterbury, who had said she was sexually harassed by Kirby’s predecessor. A judge later reinstated Waterbury.

Kirby says the termination vote was retaliatory and unwarranted. He said he believes Councilman Thomas Rose is the most responsible for the termination efforts and is considering subpoenaing Rose.

Rose serves as the city’s ceremonial mayor. He didn’t immediately respond to requests seeking comment.
