ALPHARETTA, Ga. (AP) - A trial is underway for an Alpharetta woman charged in the death of a 3-year-old boy at her home daycare in 2014.

News agencies report Janna Thompson is facing second-degree murder and child cruelty charges in Max Stephens’ death.

Prosecutors say Stephens’ neck got caught in a piece of pine straw hanging on a slide in Thompson’s backyard. The boy suffocated when it choked him as he went down the slide.

They say Thompson, who had left Stephens and two other children unattended for nearly 20 minutes while she was inside, found the boy unresponsive. He later died at a hospital.

Prosecutors say Thompson was negligent.

Her attorneys say Thompson didn’t know the pine straw twine was there and, therefore, didn’t know the children were in any danger.
