BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - U.S. Housing Secretary Julian Castro says Vermont is going to be one of the first states to receive funding from the National Housing Trust Fund.

Castro made the announcement Thursday during an appearance in Burlington alongside Democratic U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy and other state and local officials.

The Housing Trust Fund is the only federal program that provides money specifically to expand affordable housing for extremely low-income households.

After making the announcement, Castro and others took part in the grand opening of the 40-unit Bright Street Cooperative Housing project, which was developed with help from federal housing programs.
