PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine’s deer hunting season is officially starting with the state’s “expanded archery” season, which allows hunters to pursue deer in densely populated areas.

The season started Saturday and runs through Dec. 10. It is centered around a handful of urban areas around the state, including Bangor, Augusta and Waterville.

It also includes less developed areas that the state says can withstand more deer hunting.

The regular archery season starts on Sept. 29 and ends Oct. 28. That season is open statewide. Antlerless deer can only be hunted in certain wildlife management districts in the state.

The firearms season for deer starts on Halloween and runs until Nov. 26.
