FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A judge has ordered a halt to the planned demolition of a building that once housed the YMCA in Frankfort.

The State Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2clzQFX ) that Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd issued a restraining order against the city on Thursday to prevent the building from being torn down.

Shepherd said in the order that it is in the public interest to stop the building from being demolished without prior approval by the court.

The fate of the building constructed in the early 1900s has hung in the balance for years. The city first took steps to demolished the dilapidated structure in 2007, but preservationists have fought to keep it from being razed.

Efforts to find investors to restore the building have been unsuccessful so far.
