ELLSWORTH, Maine (AP) - A hiking trail in Maine is being dedicated in the name of a researcher who once led one of the largest salmon tagging efforts in the world.

The Ed Hastings Memorial Trail is at Green Lake National Fish Hatchery in Ellsworth, Maine.

Hastings was a longtime member of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Atlantic salmon research team.

The agency says Hastings managed the logistics of tagging 350,000 young salmon from hatchery pools in an operation that he led every year for five years.

Gulf of Maine Atlantic salmon are among America’s most jeopardized fish species. Hastings recruited college students, stay-at-home parents and others to serve as salmon taggers as part of his effort.

Hastings died of cancer in 2006.
