CHICAGO (AP) - Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago says its incoming freshman class is the largest in three years but the total number of students at the school dipped as the state’s ongoing budget impasse continued to affect colleges throughout the state.

In a news release, the school says the number of freshmen enrolled in the fall climbed by 801 students - a 7 percent increase over last year. It also says the number of African American, graduate, international and transfer students rose.

The release says that the overall enrollment dropped this year from last year. This fall, the school says it has a total of 9,530 students enrolled. That is 3.6 percent fewer students than the 9,891 enrolled in 2015.

Northeastern Illinois University’s main campus is on the northwest side of Chicago.
